More than 1,100 Teachers Benefit from Free School Supplies & Books to Fill Classroom Needs

Suffolk Public Schools is excited to announce a new project to support its teachers -- the opening of its new Teacher Supply Store.  To fill unmet classroom needs, all Suffolk school teachers will be able to “shop” monthly for items at no cost to themselves.

Studies show at least 94 percent of teachers nationwide use their own money on school supplies for their classrooms, and most spend at least $400 each year.  Each year, Suffolk Public Schools gives a $100 gift card to each Suffolk teacher to purchase office and classroom supplies. The Teacher Supply Store is another way Suffolk supports its teachers.

“We want to show our teachers how much we appreciate what they do to help our students,” said Deran Whitney, Ed.D, Superintendent of Suffolk Public Schools.

The Teacher Supply Store is a partnership between Suffolk Public Schools and the Suffolk Education Foundation.  School staff worked on getting the rooms set-up.  With the help of volunteers, they shelved the initial supply order at the former Driver Elementary School.  The Suffolk Education Foundation will solicit corporate donations and recruit volunteers for weekly store hours and special projects.

“The Suffolk Education Foundation is proud to partner with Suffolk Public Schools to provide this resource to our teachers,” said Patrick Belcher, SEF Vice President. “It is a great opportunity for the Education Foundation to be involved with our constituents regularly in addition to our key activities of providing grants and scholarships.

The Teacher Supply Store will maintain its stock with community support.  Financial donations as well as donations of items are already being accepted.  The first two community organizations to make sizable donations are The Virginia Department of Transportation and Old Dominion University.

Old Dominion University’s Darden College of Education donated approximately 1,000 new and gently used children’s and young adult books at a variety of reading.  The retail value of these books is estimated at $15,000.  Suffolk teachers will be able to select the appropriate books for their classrooms’ reading levels and begin to build their classroom libraries.  “The Darden College of Education and Professional Studies is thrilled to contribute books to Suffolk Public Schools, one of our local school divisions, and their Teacher Supply Store,” said Dean Jane S. Bray.  “I want to acknowledge Michael Ruffin, director of innovative technology, for his efforts in coordinating this educational initiative which will help reduce the barriers some students and families face in accessing needed materials to support learning.  The resources will undoubtedly equip teachers with the tools they need for engaging students and fostering a high quality learning experience within their classrooms.”

Suffolk Public Schools’ Teacher Supply Store also received a hefty donation of gently-used office supplies from the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Hampton Roads District Inventory Section. When the district’s downtown office relocated to north Suffolk, not all used supplies would make the trip.  “We work hand-in-hand with the City of Suffolk and want to be good community partners,” said Kim Bartholomew, VDOT’s District Asset & Inventory Manager. Eight pallets of used office supplies such as binders, staplers, and clipboards were donated to Suffolk Public Schools. These supplies will help Suffolk’s hardworking teachers stock their classrooms.
